Every task has a tracking code: six characters made of numbers and lowercase letters, for example gi6y3m. Put the code in an email or a document, and later find the task again by pasting the code into the search box.
Where you see the code
- In the detail view, at the top left: the full code with a tag icon.
- In the manual editor, above the title. When you continue a task, the editor already shows the code that the new step will get.
- On task cards and in task lists, as a small tag icon. On mobile, a swipe to the right also shows a Copy button next to Done and Continue (only Copy when the task is blocked).
Copying the code
Click or tap the code or the tag icon. Maptero copies it with Maptero: in front, for example Maptero:gi6y3m, so the code is easy to recognize in an email. For two seconds the code changes to "Copied". If your browser does not allow the copy, it shows "Not copied".
The copy holds two versions of the code. When you paste it into an email or a document that keeps formatting, such as Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail or Word, you get Maptero:gi6y3m as a small italic link that opens the task. When you paste it into a place for plain text, such as a text editor, an email subject, WhatsApp or the search box, you get only the text. To paste only the text into an email, use the Paste and Match Style command of your email program.
Finding a task by its code
Paste the code into the search box: with or without Maptero:, in upper or lower case, also with quotes or brackets around it. Only the full six characters match. The lists then show only the tasks with that code, and Maptero opens the detail view of the newest one, even when another filter hides it. It opens once: after you close it, it opens again only when you enter a code again.
Opening a task from the link
Click the link, for example in a reply to your email. Maptero opens with the code in the search box and shows the newest task with that code, the same as when you paste the code into the search box.
The link works only for you. A person who is not signed in to Maptero sees the sign-in page and a note that the link is for the person who owns the task. Maptero shows them nothing about the task.
If you are not signed in, Maptero shows the sign-in page first. Sign in with the code that Maptero emails you, and the task opens. If you use the link in that sign-in email instead of typing the code, Maptero opens without the task: click the task link again.
On an iPhone, a link in an email opens in Safari, not in the Maptero app on your home screen. Safari has its own sign-in, so the first time you may need to sign in there.
One code for a whole thread
A task keeps its code forever. When you continue a task, the new step gets the same code. When you close a recurring task, the next occurrence gets the same code too. So one code finds the whole thread: the first task, its continue steps, and its repeats. Repeats that you closed before tracking codes existed keep separate codes.
Limits
The search looks only at the tasks that Maptero has loaded: all open tasks and your 500 most recently closed tasks. A code from an old email finds nothing when the whole thread was closed before those 500 tasks. The link has the same limit, because it uses the search.
